The full form of IAS is Indian Administrative Service. To become an IAS officer one should qualify in UPSC civils exam. This exam was conducted by Union Public Service Commission board. The exam was conducted every year. There are prelims and mains exam. Qualifying in these 2 exams and attending a personal interview will become an IAS officer.

It is not possible to become an IAS officer after 12th standard. The minimum eligibility to apply for UPSC civil services exam is having a graduate degree of any stream from any recognized college or university. So, the aspirants must complete their degree course. After completion of their degree course, then they can apply for UPSC civil service exam.

How to Become an IAS after 12th

Becoming IAS officer after 12th is not possible. After your 12th standard you should complete your graduation. Your graduation takes easily 3-4 years. So, after completion of your graduation, you prepare for 1 year and then apply for UPSC IAS civil service examination.

Steps To Become an IAS Officer after 12th Standard:

Step 1: Complete Your Graduation

As the minimum qualification to apply for UPSC CSE is the candidate should complete graduation of any stream. So, aspirants please pursue your graduation in your interested field. The most important thing is concentrate on your studies.

Step 2: Apply For UPSC CSE

After completion of your graduation, you are eligible to become an IAS officer. Wait for notification to be released by UPSC. After the notification is released apply for UPSC IAS civil service examination. You can visit the official website of UPSC and once notification is released you can apply for the exam. You should apply for the exam through online mode.

Step 3: Qualifying UPSC IAS CSE Exam

After applying for UPSC CSE you should prepare well for your exam. There are 3 stages of exam to become an IAS officer. They are preliminary exam, Mains exam and personal interview. The prelims exam was conducted every year in the months of May or June.

Preliminary Exam:

The prelims exam is also named as Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). There are 2 papers in this examination. One paper is mainly based on general knowledge and another paper is conducted for comprehension and logical reasoning. Each paper is conducted for 2 hours and maximum marks for each paper is 200 marks.

Mains Examination:

The candidates who have qualified in prelims exam are eligible to attend mains exam. Mains exam is a descriptive type exam. There are 5 papers in mains examination. The duration of each exam is 3 hours and each exam is conducted for 300 marks. The papers in Mains exam are as follows:

  • English Paper
  • General Essay Paper
  • One Indian Language Paper
  • General Studies Paper
  • Any two optional papers

Step 4: Clearing Personal Interview Round

After the completion of prelims and mains exam, personal interview is conducted. The personal interview is conducted for those, who have qualified in both prelims and mains exam. The personal interview is conducted to check candidate’s personality and mental ability. After personal interview is completed a final list will be prepared which consists of list of candidates who have qualified for the IAS officer post.

After selection of candidates in the personal interview, the selected candidates are admitted to National Academy of Administration at Mussoorie, now which is known as Lal Bahadur Sastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA). The students are admitted there to know about the guidance of IAS probationers. This is like training period for the candidate, after completing the training the candidates are posted as per requirements of the Central and State governments.

Follow these above steps to become an IAS officer after 12th standard. The aspirant should study well for the exam. As there is a tough competition for IAS exam, the students are requested to concentrate on their studies and should study 8 to 9 hours per day.
