• The rank of the candidate in UPSC CSE exam depends on Mains exam and performance of candidate in personal interview. The UPSC CSE Mains exam consists of 1750 marks and 275 marks for personal interview.
• UPSC syllabus for Mains exam consists of 9 papers, out of them only 7 papers are taken for final ranking. In the remaining 2 optional papers the candidate should score minimum marks.

Physique of an IPS Officer

Height

• For men candidates the minimum height tis 165cm
• For women candidates the maximum height is 150cm

Chest

• The minimum chest fully expanded for men is 84 cm.
• The minimum chest fully expanded for women is 79 cm.

Eyesight

• The total amount of Myopia (including the cylinder) should not exceed minus 4.00 D and the total amount of Hypermetropia (including the cylinder) should not exceed plus 4.00 D. The presence of Squint may disqualify you.
• Spectacles although are permitted, but a very good grade of color vision and binocular vision is a prerequisite.

IPS Recruitment and Training after IPS Exam

• After the candidates are qualified in personal interview, they should take training.
• The IPS training is one of the longest of all civil services training and the IPS training is almost 2 years.
• The first part of the training is done at Mussoorie and the candidates will go for Bharat Darshan with other services in groups.
• The second part of training for IPS is done in the National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
• In the academy training the candidates will learn basics. In cadre, they expected to pass 2 levels of the exam and their promotions to the next level are based on that.

Civil Services Examination (CSE) /IPS Exam

The commission UPSC, which is authorized by the government has the responsibility for selecting the right candidates for the civil services post. Every year nearly 1000 candidates are selected for all major 24 Indian civil services posts. In 2018, around 9 lakhs aspirants applied for UPSC CSE exam, but only half of them have attended the exam.

IPS exam is one of the toughest exam in India, including the duration of exam (1 Year), vast syllabus and the competition is high. There are 3 stages in IPS exam. The 1^st stage is Preliminary exam, which is objective type and conducted every year in the month of August. The 2^nd stage is Mains exam, this exam is conducted for those who have cleared preliminary exam. The mains exam is a written type and this exam is conducted every year in December. The 3^rd stage is personal interview and is conducted every year during the months of April/May. The final result of IAS exam will be announced in June.

Some Other Eligibility Conditions Considered for IPS Exam:

Nationality:

To apply for IAS/IPS exam, the candidate should be a citizen of India.

For other civil services, a candidate should be either:

• A citizen of India
• Or a subject of Nepal
• Or a subject of Bhutan
• Or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1^st January 1962 with the thought of permanently settling in India
• A person of India, who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the thought of permanently settling in India.

If the candidates are of the above conditions, then the candidate shall be a person in whose concern a certificate of eligibility issued by government of India.

Age Limit:

To apply for UPSC CSE IAS exam, the minimum age of the candidate is 21 years and maximum age limit is 32 years.

The Upper Age Limit mentioned above will be given relaxation in the following conditions:

• For SC/ST candidates the age relaxation is till a limit of 5 years.
• For OBC candidates the age relaxation is 3 years more than upper age limit.
• For candidates being domiciled in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, 5 years relaxation is given
• For candidates in the condition of Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country relaxation of 3 years is given.
• For Ex-serviceman age relaxation of 5 years is given.
• For ECOs/SSCOs the age relaxation of 3 years is given.
• Candidates in condition blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons the age relaxation of 10 years is given.

Overview – Examination Scheme/IPS Exam

Examination Summary

The UPSC conducts Indian Civil Services exam every year. The UPSC exam schedule will be announced during Jan-Feb and the selection of candidates is made of 3 levels. At every stage of exam elimination is there for the final selection.

The UPSC Competitive Examination Comprises of Three Successive Levels:

Step 1 – Preliminary Examination – Objective Type (Qualifier)

Step 2 – Mains Examination – Written Test

Step 3 – Interview/Personality Test

The preliminary exam is held in May/June and the results are announced in July/August. The Mains exam is conducted in Oct/Nov and the results are announced in Mar/April. The final selection and posting of aspirants depend on their ranking and the available vacancies for different posts.

Preliminary Examination:

The preliminary exam will consist of 2 papers of objective type and carry a limit of 400 marks. The candidates who have cleared preliminary exam will be eligible to attend Mains exam. The marks obtained by candidate in preliminary exam, who are qualified for admission to the Mains exam is not considered in the final recruitment process.

Mains Examination:

The mains exam will be conducted for about 12 to 13 times the total an approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year. The Mains exam consists of 9 papers in total including very long essay paper. The candidates who have qualified in mains exam are allowed to attend for a personality test.

Interview/Personality Test:

The candidates of about 2 times the number of vacancies are selected to take interview/personality test. The personality test will carry 275 marks. Marks obtained by candidates in personality test will decide their final ranking.

The candidates will be posted to various services according to their ranks in the exam and the preference expressed by them while applying.
