Pension Rules in Indian Railways

As railway employees are applicable with pension rules, they are presently contained in the manual of Railway Pension Rules, 1950 and Indian Railway Establishment Code Volume II (1971 Edition). In 1987 establishment code was updated, but the chapters Pension Rules, commutation of pension rules and extraordinary pension rules were not updated as it was initiated to bring as a separate self-contained volume on Railway Pension Rules which incorporates the vast changes in the rules and a large number of executive instructions. Similarly in 1969, manual of railway pension rules which is meant for guidance of staff dealing with pension work was reprinted and incorporated corrections up to Sep 1, 1969.

The present volume of pension rules is thus a self-contained compilation codifying all the Pension rules applicable to all railway employees in the form of statutory rules, on the pattern of Central civil service rules, 1972 applicable on civil side.

In 1993 pension rules titled ad Railway Services (Pension) rules, the compilation actually embodies the existing rules in 3 parts. They are Railway Services (Pension) rules, Railway Services (Commutation of Pension) Rules, and Railway Services (Extraordinary Pension) Rules. So there are 3 separate set of rules are available in one volume which is the advantage of particularly in Railway Personnel dealing with pension cases and settlement of Railway staff over the vast stretch of Indian Railways.

In present book of Railway Services (Pension) Rules, 1993 the provisions contained are issued by President of India in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the proviso to Article 309 of the constitution of India. These replaced rules and orders on the subject prevailing hitherto.

In accordance with the Government of India’s policy, this volume has been printed in diglot edition.

The Railway Board will be glad to consider any suggestion from the Railway Administrations.
