UPSC which is a government authorized conducts Civil Services Examination (CSE). This UPSC CSE exam was conducted for recruiting the candidates for 24 major posts in India out of them 3 major and prestigious civil services posts are IAS, IPS and IFS. Aspirants preparing for IAS and IPS posts are recruited in the diverse roles like collector, commissioner, head of public sector units, cabinet secretary, and chief secretary etc.

  • IAS exam is one of the toughest and trending competitive exam which was conducted by UPSC. The UPSC conducts CSE exam every year for selecting various civil service officers like IAS, IPS and IFS.
  • The UPSC CSE exam is conducted every year in 2 stages, i.e. Preliminary exam and Mains Exam.
  • The preliminary exam is conducted to check candidate’s aptitude and general studies. The preliminary exam consists of multiple choice type questions.
  • The Mains exam is conducted to test a candidate on nine essays and an interview.
  • The whole process of UPSC exam takes around 1 year from issue of notification to final selection of candidature to IAS post.
  • Civil Services Exam is conducted in 3 major levels, which are also called the Phases of IAS or IAS exam.

Phase I: Civil Services Preliminary Examination:

This preliminary exam was organized every year in the month of August and the results of preliminary exam are announced in October month.

Phase II: Civil Services Mains Examination:

The mains exam is conducted for the candidates who have qualified in preliminary exam. This mains exam was conducted every year in the month of December and the results are issued in the month of March.

Phase III: Civil Services Personality Test (Interview):

This is the last stage of IAS exam and this interview was normally conducted every year in the month of May.

  • The UPSC has changed the upper age limit and number of attempts for a candidate.
  • The upper age limit for SC/ST candidates is 37 years and a choice of infinite attempts. For OBC candidate’s upper age limit is 35 years and 9 attempts. For general aspirants the upper age limit is 32 years and 6 attempts.
  • For physically handicapped candidates, the upper age limits for general /OBC/ and SC/ST are 42/45/and 47 years. The number of attempts for general and OBC/ are 9 and for SC/ST infinity.

Eligibility in Terms of Academics for IAS Exam

  • The candidate should be a degree holder from a recognized college or university.
  • The candidates who are ready to attempt their final exam and waiting for results can apply for preliminary exam, and candidates who have cleared preliminary exam and applying for mains exam should submit documents of proof of having cleared their final examination.
  • The UPSC has also right to treat a candidate without preliminary and mains exam, if the candidate has passed an examination organized by other institutions.
  • A candidate who has passed the final year of MBBS exam or any other medical exam can attempt mains exam. However the candidates should carry a pass certificate at time of attending personal interview.

  • The rank of the candidate in UPSC CSE exam depends on Mains exam and performance of candidate in personal interview. The UPSC CSE Mains exam consists of 1750 marks and 275 marks for personal interview.
  • UPSC syllabus for Mains exam consists of 9 papers, out of them only 7 papers are taken for final ranking. In the remaining 2 optional papers the candidate should score minimum marks.
  • The UPSC mains exam is totally written exam and it consists of following papers which are mentioned below:
  • Two papers which only qualifying marks and not counted for your final ranking.
  • Paper A – You have to select any one Indian language from the languages included in the 8th schedule to the Indian Constitution. Total Marks 300

What is the procedure to become an IAS officer after giving IAS Exam 2019?

The IAS exam is officially called the UPSC civil services exam or CSE. The UPSE CSE exam consist of 3 levels- Preliminary, Mains and personal interview. In today’s competitive world grabbing an IAS job is not an easy task. Due to a lot of competition, IAS is one of the toughest exam, but it is not impossible for a candidate with right attitude and approach.

Civil Services Examination (CSE) /IAS Exam

The commission UPSC, which is authorized by the government has the responsibility for selecting the right candidates for the civil services post. Every year nearly 1000 candidates are selected for all major 24 Indian civil services posts. In 2018, around 9 lakhs aspirants applied for UPSC CSE exam, but only half of them have attended the exam.

IAS exam is one of the toughest exam in India, including the duration of exam (1 Year), vast syllabus and the competition is high. There are 3 stages in IAS exam. The 1st stage is Preliminary exam, which is objective type and conducted every year in the month of August. The 2nd stage is Mains exam, this exam is conducted for those who have cleared preliminary exam. The mains exam is a written type and this exam is conducted every year in December. The 3rd stage is personal interview and is conducted every year during the months of April/May. The final result of IAS exam will be announced in June.

Conditions for Considering the Application Ineligible for IAS Exam:

A candidate who is appointed to be IAS or IFS on the basis of previous examination and is also a member of that service will be prohibited from being eligible to compete at this review.

If a candidate is appointed as IAS/IFS after the preliminary exam, 2018 is over and he/she continues to be a member of that service, in that case the candidate will be restricted from being eligible to appear in Civil Services Mains exam.

If candidate is appointed as IAS/IFS after mains exam, but before the result and continues to be a member of that service, then he/she shall be banned to be a part of both the service/post on the basis of result of this examination.

Some Other Eligibility Conditions Considered for IAS Exam:

Nationality:

To apply for IAS/IPS exam, the candidate should be a citizen of India.

For other civil services, a candidate should be either:

  • A citizen of India
  • Or a subject of Nepal
  • Or a subject of Bhutan
  • Or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the thought of permanently settling in India
  • A person of India, who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the thought of permanently settling in India.

If the candidates are of the above conditions, then the candidate shall be a person in whose concern a certificate of eligibility issued by government of India.

Age Limit:

To apply for UPSC CSE IAS exam, the minimum age of the candidate is 21 years and maximum age limit is 32 years.

The Upper Age Limit mentioned above will be given relaxation in the following conditions:
  • For SC/ST candidates the age relaxation is till a limit of 5 years.
  • For OBC candidates the age relaxation is 3 years more than upper age limit.
  • For candidates being domiciled in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, 5 years relaxation is given
  • For candidates in the condition of Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country relaxation of 3 years is given.
  • For Ex-serviceman age relaxation of 5 years is given.
  • For ECOs/SSCOs the age relaxation of 3 years is given.
  • Candidates in condition blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped persons the age relaxation of 10 years is given.
This is not enough till we have known. There are some more criteria’s under which UPSC allows aspirants to be a part of IAS Exam for IAS under certain conditions as follow:
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST and OBC who are relaxed under any clause of eligibility above, i.e. those coming under the category of Ex-serviceman, persons from J&K, blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically handicapped etc. will be eligible for grant of cumulative age-relaxation under both the categories.
  • A physically disabled candidate will be considered to be eligible for post only after a physical exam by Government or any other authority, and the candidate is determined to fulfill all the requirements of physical and medical standards for the concerned posts to be granted to the physically disabled candidates by the Government.

Overview – Examination Scheme/IAS Exam

Examination Summary

The UPSC conducts Indian Civil Services exam every year. The UPSC exam schedule will be announced during Jan-Feb and the selection of candidates is made of 3 levels. At every stage of exam elimination is there for the final selection.

The Competitive Examination Comprises of Three Successive Levels:

Step 1 – Preliminary Examination – Objective Type (Qualifier)

Step 2 – Mains Examination – Written Test

Step 3 – Interview/Personality Test

The preliminary exam is held in May/June and the results are announced in July/August. The Mains exam is conducted in Oct/Nov and the results are announced in Mar/April. The final selection and posting of aspirants depend on their ranking and the available vacancies for different posts.

Preliminary Examination:

The preliminary exam will consist of 2 papers of objective type and carry a limit of 400 marks. The candidates who have cleared preliminary exam will be eligible to attend Mains exam. The marks obtained by candidate in preliminary exam, who are qualified for admission to the Mains exam is not considered in the final recruitment process.

Mains Examination:

The mains exam will be conducted for about 12 to 13 times the total an approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year. The Mains exam consists of 9 papers in total including very long essay paper. The candidates who have qualified in mains exam are allowed to attend for a personality test.

Interview/Personality Test:

The candidates of about 2 times the number of vacancies are selected to take interview/personality test. The personality test will carry 275 marks. Marks obtained by candidates in personality test will decide their final ranking.

The candidates will be posted to various services according to their ranks in the exam and the preference expressed by them while applying.
