Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Civil Services Exam 2019

Nationality

A candidate must be

  • A citizen of India or
  • A subject of Nepal or
  • A subject of Bhutan or
  • A Tibetan Refugee or
  • A Person of India who migrated from different countries and permanently settled in India.

Age Limit

To apply for UPSC civil services exam there is a certain age limit. The minimum age limit to apply for UPSC civil service exam is 21 years. The maximum age limit is different for candidates based on religion.

  • For general candidates the maximum age limit is 32 years
  • For OBC candidates the maximum age limit is 35 years
  • For SC/ST candidates the maximum age limit is 37 years
  • For defence service personnel, disabled in any operation the maximum age limit is 35 years.
  • For ex-serviceman the maximum age limit is 37 years.

Educational Qualification

The minimum educational qualification to apply for UPSC civil services is the candidate should hold a degree from recognized college or university.

There are some conditions which the candidate can apply for UPSC civil services exam

  • The candidates who have written their final year exam and waiting for result can apply for UPSC prelims exam and they should submit pass certificate at the time of applying for mains exam.
  • Candidates who have completed their graduation from any technical stream can apply for UPSC civil services exam.
  • Candidates who have cleared final year MBBS exam and did not completed their internship can also apply for UPSC civil services exam. In this case, the candidate should submit internship certificate at the time of personal interview round.

As it is a civil servant exam, it is not possible for a candidate to crack UPSC exam in single attempt. So the UPSC has specified number of attempts for the exam based on the category of the candidate.

  • The general candidates can attempt for UPSC exam 6 times.
  • For SC/ST the candidates can attempt for UPSC exam till they reach their maximum age limit.
  • For OBC candidates the number of attempts for UPSC exam is 9 times.
  • A candidate who is personally disabled can attempt for UPSC exam as many times as possible.
